"Give me a staff of honour for my age,
which should accompany old age,
as honour, love, troops of friends"
- William Shakespeare
Artists Urban Village, a chapter of PAL Canada, is a registered non-profit society dedicated to providing quality, affordable housing with support and creative opportunities for seniors, disabled, and low-income workers in Edmonton’s professional arts. The dream is a safe, secure, affordable home in a building harbouring a community of our senior artists.
That dream is coming true in the Artists Quarters project, on the east side of Edmonton’s downtown core.
History of Artists Urban Village
We began in the spring of 2007 when a small steering committee was formed to gauge interest within the Edmonton Arts Community for a PAL-like residence. In November 2007 an information and visioning session was held for the community. Based on the success of this event a Board Of Directors was created and, in August 2008, Artists Urban Village was registered as a non-profit society by the Province Of Alberta.
In January 2009 Artists Urban Village was awarded $20,000 through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Seed Funding Program. We partnered with The Communitas Group to assist us with a Needs Assessment Survey and the creation of a Business Plan. 345 respondents completed the survey. Of those respondents 131 stated that they were interested in being part of this project.
The Board has continued to envision and refine the possibilities and needs of a housing project of this size and scope, guided by the Communitas Group. Through a strong bond with Edmonton's Arts Habitat Association, AUV has been gaining knowledge of — and working to change — City and Provincial laws and regulations governing housing development.
In 2010 Artist Urban Village partnered with Arts Habitat Association Of Edmonton and created the first affordable housing cooperative for artists in Edmonton. The official opening of the Arts Hub Housing Cooperative was held in the spring of 2011.
Our Business Plan was completed October, 2011. Phase One of the Feasibility Study for our next project — a $27 million 60-unit facility in the Quarters Downtown — was completed at the end of 2012 and the design of Artists Quarters is well underway.
Please visit the Upcoming Events page to track our history and upcoming developments.
Every step of the way on this journey we have been met with interested friends eager to join in creating something new.
Please, join us.
The work continues.
