Overview

Artists Quarters

We are building a new complex for artists in downtown Edmonton where artists can live and work in a creative, supportive, sustainable community.

Four flours will provide space for non-profit organizations and artists’ studios, including a theatre (a new home for Firefly Theatre), and the Alberta Craft Council’s Gallery. The tower above will provide approximately 60 live-work units for a wide range of artists:

·      Multigenerational – Artists Quarters is for senior and emerging artists. It will be a community where older artists have stability and affordability, while younger artists benefit from their expertise.

·      Mixed income – The live-work units will help meet the proven need for affordable housing options for low-income professional artists. Artists with more income can also take part in the project – a range of options is available for participating.

·      Multi-disciplinary – The live-work units and artist studios will have state-of-the art ventilation, soundproofing and environmental components. Whether a discipline calls for a grand piano, a ceramic kiln, the comings and goings of students or peace and quiet for a writer’s concentration, the units will allow artists to integrate their work into their lives

Artists Quarters is also:

·      A partnership between Arts Habitat Edmonton and Artists Urban Village (a chapter of PAL Canada) with support from the City of Edmonton.

·      A cooperative, in which the residents share the decision-making and build a vibrant community with which to share their future.

·      A sustainable project with environmentally friendly construction to minimize long-term utility costs.

·      Architecturally engaging. The building will retain two facades of the historic Koermann Block.

·      A catalyst for the redevelopment of the Quarters downtown. The site is only two blocks from the core of the arts district and one block from the proposed new LRT Station. The river valley crest, the CKUA building on Jasper Avenue and the new Boyle Street Community Centre are short walks away.

Approximately one-third of the units in Artists Quarters are allocated. Be part of planning your own live-work space and a community that will meet your needs.
